Sustainable stays – here are some ways that we are reimagining Villa hospitality to be more sustainable.

At Tranquil Getaways On Obi Maleny we are always looking for ways to make our accommodation more sustainable. We know that making small changes in our daily practices can collectively make a significant environmental difference.

Below are some of the key features of our sustainable practices:

Sustainable Local Procurement

As much as possible we source products for our guests from local suppliers. The milk and yoghurt is purchased from Maleny dairies. The cheese in our arrival platters is sourced from both Kenilworth Dairies and Maleny Cheese. These businesses have long term connections to the local area, and have sustainable practices in place.

Due to our town location we walk to the local supermarkets to collect products used both by ourselves and for our guests. Using these local suppliers and shops helps to boost local employment while reducing food miles.

In-House Products for a sustainable stay

Our guests benefit from Barb’s background as a hospitality teacher. Each guest is greeted with welcome biscuits that have been lovingly made in Obi House using locally sourced ingredients. All guests also get a serve of in-house made granola.

If guests order a breakfast hamper Barb uses home grown herbs along with other locally sourced ingredients. And the Villas are regularly brightened with flowers picked from the garden.

Sustainable Bathroom

Bathroom products

In the bathrooms we continue to review our practices considering how we can increase our sustainability.  We use bulk containers of environmentally friendly bathroom products. We have removed all single use bathroom products from our practices.

To help reduce the amount of laundry we encourage our guests to hang up their towels for air drying rather than single use. We added extra towel rails following up on a guest’s suggestion. All villas have clothes airers to enable natural drying of any damp items you may use during your stay.

Sustainable Energy Choices

During our management we have added solar panels to Obi House to introduce power back to the grid. This has significantly reduced our power usage from the grid. Through careful monitoring we are now looking to further increase the number of solar panels.

Each Villa is equipped with gas hot water systems. The gas hot water system provides instant hot water for our guests. Gas hot water systems generally produce less greenhouse gases than standard electric models.

We have installed low voltage lighting in all Villas as energy efficient lighting options.

In the two years of our ownership we have made significant changes to energy provision. Which has meant that we are now providing a more sustainable accommodation option.

Sustainable Car Usage

Transport

The purchase of an eight seater van in the last 12 months was designed to encourage more group travel. We encourage our guests to book as a group rather than individually reducing the amount of time vehicles are on local roads.

Our location also means our guests can park within our grounds and walk to all local cafe’s, supermarkets and restaurants further reducing car usage.

Other sustainable practices

We also put compost towers into the garden soon after taking ownership. This means that most food scraps are now helping to maintain healthy soil, rather than adding to land fill.

Each Villa is provided with a water bottle filled with our clean town water. This discourages the use of single use plastic water bottles.

All of these practices are our way of helping the environment and creating more sustainable accommodation. We are always looking for other ways to increase our sustainability without compromising guest comfort, perhaps during your stay you can suggest a few.

See you soon,

Barb and Greg
