What events are happening in Maleny early 2026?

There are a couple of events happening early in 2026 that make Maleny a destination to add to your calendar. There is the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Writers Festival who have partnered this year with the Horizon Festival. The Maleny Lane is re-opening their open mic night on 16th February. Tranquil Getaways On Obi Maleny is the venue for the Seeds to Self retreat March 20-22, with the theme ‘Return to Rhythm Retreat’.

Book yourself a few days in Maleny to enjoy any or all of these events. Or maybe just come to Maleny and appreciate the time away for the everyday.

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland Writers Festival

A key event for Maleny in early 2026 is the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Writers Festival returning in 2026 after a successful 2025. From Friday 1st May to Monday 4th May the Sunshine Coast Hinterland will host writers and readers in various venues. This year the festival is running in conjunction with the Horizon Festival.

The three day program will be filled with author talks, panel discussions, workshops, book launches and more. Authors from across different genres will be presenting, including; Frances Whiting, Cathy Kelly and Ian Kemish.

Book your accommodation for the weekend at Tranquil Getaways On Obi Maleny and enjoy a literary break in this idyllic part of South East Queensland. Included in your 3 night explore package for this weekend, is one ticket to the 3 hour poetry writing workshops which includes a Obi platypus walking tour. If you are staying here you will be perfectly placed to walk to most of the events offered over the weekend.

There is plenty to see and do when not at a Festival event. Here is a list of our top 10 recommendations of things to do on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Upfront chalkboard at maleny lane re-opens

Another great reason to head to Maleny is the return beloved upfront chalkboard at Maleny Lane. Starting February 16 at 5:30 PM, every Monday night. Offering a wonderful opportunity to enjoy local eateries while discovering talented performers from the community. The relaxed atmosphere creates a perfect setting to unwind after the weekend and connect with locals over great food and live entertainment. It’s a beautiful celebration of local talent that captures the warm, community-focused spirit that makes Maleny a great place any time of the year.

Easter and School Holidays

If you are travelling with children there are a host of things that they will enjoy doing on the Sunshine Coast. A couple of the big draw cards for all members of your family include: Australia Zoo, Maleny Botanic Garden and Bird World and Aussie World Theme Park.

I would also recommend a visit to Amazeworld at Tanawha. It has several mazes which you can get lost in, mini-golf, puzzles, a playground for the kids and a decent cafe. A lovely spot to spend a few hours as a family.

Further afield there is the Yandina Ginger Factory, which is not just about ginger. There you can enjoy a short train ride on Moreton the Ginger Train, or take a indoor boat ride on Overboard. When you are ready to stop there is a great cafe with lots of options, including delicious ice cream with some ginger options. I highly recommend macadamia and ginger ice-cream.

Travelling without children

If you are travelling without children then the Sunshine Coast Hinterland will be your oasis. Great walking options including, Kondalilla Falls and walking part, or all, of the Great Hinterland Walk. Fantastic food and drink options from pubs and cafes to fine dining. Interesting shopping in the towns of Maleny and Montville. Or simply pack a picnic and enjoy the view at one of the spots along the Maleny – Montville Road.

Perhaps camping is your thing. Then you might pitch your tent at Booloumba Creek Campground and be surrounded by rainforest or at Kenilworth Homestead where you can have an open fire. Both of these spots are only a short drive into Kenilworth town. Which will supply all your needs from the general store, bakery, cheese factory or selection of cafes. Definitely try some Kenilworth cheese and maybe take the 1kg donut challenge at the bakery.

Whatever is your situation or expectation, a few days on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland will help you reset and relax.
